Assessment Ideas

Spelling/Grammar
  • Generate spelling lists related to Australian themes e.g. native animals, aboriginal studies or specific historical events.
  • Use the Word Work and Spelling and Vocabulary Worksheets for the Reading Library genre stories to improve students’ spelling skills.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of capital letters by identifying states, territories, capital cities and major landmarks on a map of Australia.
  • Select a passage from one of the on-line stories as dictation assessing use of capital letters.
Reading
  • Complete the Fill the Gaps and Multiple Choice questions at the end of the story (available for the Junior Readers, Reading Library and Advanced Library genre stories).
  • Use the Learning Support Worksheets for the Reading Library genre stories to practise a range of reading skills.
  • Use one or more of the on-line stories to write descriptions of the characters in the format of a ‘Who Am I?’
  • Design a dust cover for one of the on-line stories including a detailed blurb on the back cover.
Writing
  • Visit a local Australian landmark or historical site. Write a recount about the day including a description of the significance of the site of the excursion.
  • Design an information booklet/brochure about an aspect of the Australian Outback e.g. Overland Telegraph, Mining Towns, Great Outback Explorers.
  • Write a reflective piece about what it means to be an Australian.
Oral Language
  • Hold an ‘Australiana’ day where student bring items to school that are specifically Australian. Each student presents his/her item to the class detailing its significance.
  • Recite Australian poetry such as ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’ aloud using voice projection and intonation.
  • Create a slide show presentation about a topic based on an Australian theme e.g. Historical Events such as the Gold Rush, the arrival of the First Fleet, Gallipoli and Federation; Aboriginal Cultural Heritage such as Kinship, Sacred Sites, Ceremonies, Bush Tucker, Bush Medicine, Language, Traditional Clothing and Tribal Customs. Orally present slide show to the class.
