The Ziptales ‘Standardised Assessment Measure’ (SAM) is based on, and emulates, the standardised literacy tests which are now used in Australian education systems.
SAM offers
- a full online simulation of standardised literacy tests (Year 3 and Year 5) – complete with comprehension, grammar/punctuation, dictation and editing items - to help prepare children for standardised tests (the ‘dress rehearsal’ factor) and
- immediate feedback to the teacher in the form of a line by line diagnostic of how the child performed - to help teachers analyse and build on children’s skill base (the diagnostic and remediation factor).
We are happy to offer SAM free to everyone.
Please read the Introductory Notes for Teachers before using the SAM tests.
Before beginning the SAM tests please make sure that your computer meets the following requirements:

That sound is enabled on your computer and speakers are turned on. This is necessary for the dictation section of the test. Click here to test it. If you could hear the sound you are ready to continue.
NB: The email address that the results will be sent to should be the teachers, not the students.
Please note, that the PDF results that are emailed to you are named according to the school name and student name that is input at the beginning of the test, for example Bunbury Primary_Ken Jones.pdf. If the school name is left blank the file would be called _Ken Jones.pdf and this could create a problem if another student called Ken Jones does the same thing - the first file would be overwritten. Also student names input as KDY are not meaningful and will make it difficult to identify an individuals results should something happen and you do not receive them in an email.
